Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Eruption Height Approximately 2,000 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday (18/6/2024) at 20.35 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 9 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 2,000 meters above the peak (3,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 241 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on June 18, 2024, from 12.00 to 18.00 WIT showed 6 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-5 millimeters and durations of 28-84 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 85 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-6 millimeters and durations of 19-26 seconds, and 2 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-9 millimeters, s-p 3-3.5 seconds, and durations of 18-22 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 7 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,185 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (521 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 143 times.
