Reuters Institute research shows the most relied-upon social media platforms and websites for watching online news videos in Indonesia at the beginning of 2024.
31% of respondents chose YouTube as their primary platform for watching news videos, the highest among other prominent social media platforms.
TikTok was chosen by 22% of respondents, followed by Facebook at 17%.
Instagram was selected by 11% of respondents, while 10% watched news videos directly on media websites.
X (formerly Twitter) was chosen by a smaller percentage, at 6%, while other platforms accounted for the remaining 8%.
Generally, Indonesia is among the Asia-Pacific countries that enjoy watching short online news videos, with a proportion reaching 78%.
Previous research, the Digital News Report 2021 and 2023, showed that for online news, most audiences still prefer text due to its flexibility and control. However, the research team notes that this doesn't mean that videos—especially short-form videos—aren't becoming a larger part of media consumption patterns.
Two-thirds (66%) of all countries surveyed said they access short-form news videos, defined as videos lasting a few minutes or less than a minute, at least once a week.
This survey involved 2,008 Indonesian respondents. This Study of Journalism was conducted by YouGov using an online questionnaire in late January-early February 2024.
